Harness or collar for everyday walks?

A dog on a walk wearing a harness

Every dog needs a collar to carry an ID tag. Whether to clip the leash to it is another question.

When a harness makes sense

  • Your dog pulls. A harness spreads the pressure across the chest instead of the throat.
  • Your dog is small, or a flat-faced breed like a pug or a bulldog.
  • You want a handle on top to steady them at crossings or help them into the car.

How it should fit

You should be able to slide two fingers under every strap. If the harness slides to one side when your dog walks, tighten it a little. If it rubs behind the front legs, it is too tight or the wrong shape.

Getting used to it

Put it on for a minute at a time at home, with a treat each time, before the first walk. Most dogs forget they are wearing it after a couple of days.
